A connection string specifies information about a data source, most commonly a database, and how to connect to it. It is passed in code including parameters such as the name of the driver, server name and database name, as well as user name and password, to an underlying driver or provider to initiate the connection.
What is meant by connection string?
In computing, a connection string is a string that specifies information about a data source and the means of connecting to it. The connection string may include attributes such as the name of the driver, server and database, as well as security information such as user name and password.
What is connection string provider?
The connection string contains the information that the provider need to know to be able to establish a connection to the database or the data file. For example; the provider needs the address to the server (or the path to the data file) to connect to. This parameter is often named “Server” or “Data Source”.
Where are connection strings stored?
Typically, the connection string will be stored in a configuration file somewhere within the application or Web server. This connection string is typically stored in plain text to make it easy to edit and easy to change as the application is moved from development, to QA, to staging, and to production.
What is data source in connection string?
The connection string is the text representation of connection information. For example, if the data source is a SQL Server database, you can specify the name of the database. For embedded data sources, you can also write expression-based connection strings that are evaluated at run time.
