Multichannel video programming distributors (MVPDs) are service providers that deliver video content to a consumer on their television, either through satellite, cable, or linear broadcast – examples include Dish and Comcast.

Is DirecTV an Mvpd?

As the nation’s largest MVPD, DirecTV’s moves will be closely watched by other cable operators and Dish Network. DirecTV will continue to carry channels from Discovery, Viacom, AMC Networks and A+E in its existing skinny bundle offerings and on its core satellite TV platform.

What does vMVPD mean?

Virtual multichannel video programming distributors (vMVPD) — also referred to as streaming TV services — aggregate live and on-demand TV and deliver the content over the internet in a linear fashion.

What’s the difference between MVPDs, MSOs and cable companies?

The cable company is the company that, through the wireline running to your house, brings you video programming and assorted other services like internet access and voice services.

A multi-system operator operates numerous cable companies. Comcast, for example, has cable franchises over much of the US.

A multichannel video programming distributor (MVPD) is a distributor of multiple channels or linear streams of video programming. So a cable company is an MVPD, but so too is direct broadcast satellite like Dish and DirecTV.
