Yahoo! is an Internet portal that incorporates a search engine and a directory of World Wide Web sites organized in a hierarchy of topic categories. According to the site’s official FAQ (frequently asked questions) list, Yahoo stands for “Yet Another Hierarchical Officious Oracle.”

The launch comes at a time when Yahoo Mail has stagnated in its growth: the company says that it now has 227.8 million monthly active users with some 26 billion emails sent daily (2018), but that user size is only about two million more than it had a year ago.

Gmail is better than Yahoo Mail because it is structured to make more money for Google than Yahoo Mail makes for Yahoo. As a late arrival to the email scene, Google had the chance to learn from the mistakes of the incumbents and to build a system that was superior in every way.
