Spanish banks are under a lot of pressure at the moment. They are facing tougher competition and tighter regulation which can seriously affect their revenue streams.
With GDPR, the European Unions’ new data regulation, banks in Spain and other European countries have to work harder to implement processes and systems that ensure compliance. A lack of compliance will not only lead to fines but, if it allows for data breaches, if may also lead to a loss of confidence by the banks’ customers.
As far as competition goes, due to the emergence of Fintechs, traditional banks have been losing customers to these easier, and user-friendly mobile banking solutions.
As such it is important that, in the face of uncertainty and disruption, not to mention great investment in order to comply with regulations, Spanish banks work harder to maintain their customers and acquire new ones.
